Thursday, April 4: Something else happened yesterday when we were in Buffalo, New York: the Perfect Weight America Tour made a side trip to Niagara Falls. With my camera crew in tow, we set up on the Canadian side, which has the best views of the massive falls. The Niagara Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, and after hearing the roar of six million cubic feet of water tumble over the crest line, I can believe it.
I taped some segments on water for the “Perfect Weight America” TV show that’s on the TBN network on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. EST and Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. EST, or 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. PST, respectively. Those segments from Niagara Falls will air later this summer.
The thing I liked the most about filming that day was that the Niagara Falls reminded me of the “Superman II” movie, which was released back in 1980, when I was a little kid. There’s a great scene in “Superman II” where reporters Clark Kent and Lois Lane (played by Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder) are sent on assignment to investigate the “honeymoon racket” at Niagara Falls, which has long been a popular place for newlywed couples.
Clark and Lois are strolling along the Canadian side, above the falls, when a rambunctious kid is playing inside the railing, saying dumb stuff like “Look, Mom!” while he lets go with both hands and then catches himself. The stupid mom is preoccupied—only in Hollywood!—and pays her boy no heed. Lois grabs him and pulls him back over the railing, saying, “You need to be more careful!” The mom kind of swats her boy, but it’s not long before he’s using the railing as another set of monkey bars.
Then Lois turns and sees a snack shop. “Hey, Clark, what I could sure use would be a hamburger.”
“Lois, you’re at the most breathtaking sight in America, and all you can think about is food?” Clark asks incredulously.
“All I can think about is that I’m hungry. I want a hog dog or a hamburger.”
“I know,” Clark said. “With orange juice.”
That’s when they both say in unison, “Freshly squeezed.”
Listen, I’m a huge Superman fan, and “Superman II” is one of my favorite movies. As you can tell, I know every scene very well. I watched it not long ago with Joshua, who’s now a Superman fan. Like father, like son.
So Clark goes to get Lois a hamburger or a hot dog with orange juice while the kid is still playing around with the railing. Of course, the kid slips, the mom screams, and Lois panics, wondering where Clark is. Suddenly, Superman flies over, and just as the poor boy goes over the falls like a wine cork to his death, Superman scoops him up to save the day.
Ten minutes later, Clark walks over with hamburgers and orange juice. “Clark, you missed Superman . . . wait a minute, how come every time when Superman is here, you’re not here?” He tries to play it off by saying, “There you go with Superman,” but later on in the movie, she discovers that Clark and Superman are one and same when he stumbles on a bear rug and trips into a blazing fireplace, but his hand doesn’t get burned. So now you know where my mind was at Niagara Falls.
I wasn’t thinking totally about Superman. For instance, I couldn’t believe how the mist from the falls turned into a near-perpetual rain, and there was an awesome rainbow as well. Locals told me there’s always a rainbow when the sun’s out, however.
Time to get back on the bus for a drive to Rochester, where around 160 were waiting for me at Lori’s Natural Foods Center, another nice turnout.
