Not only are organic foods tastier, but they also pack more nutritional punch when they arrive on your plate or your bowl.

Thursday, June 5: Here’s something that’ll interest you: The Journal of Applied Nutrition, over a two-year period, purchased both organically and conventionally grown apples, potatoes, pears, wheat, and sweet corn in the western suburbs of Chicago and analyzed these foods for their mineral contents. Four to fifteen samples were taken for each food group.

Just as I have a burden to help people take weight off their bodies, I have a burden to do my part to take weight off the planet.

Monday, June 2: Everyone has become aware of the environmental challenges lying ahead of us because of global warming. While there’s scientific disagreement behind the root causes of global warming—and I’m not taking sides on this contentious issue—the fact remains that climate changes are happening right before our eyes. I haven’t forgotten how hot the summer of 2005 was—the hottest year on record—or the buffeting our home took when Hurricane Wilma roared through South Florida. We are all responsible for climate change when we turn on the air conditioning in our homes, drive our cars to work, school, and errands, take an airline flight, and consume goods and services.

My wife, Nicki, said something very interesting recently. She said, “When I don’t get any sleep, all I want to do is eat.”

Sunday, May 31: Poor Nicki isn’t getting that much rest these days, not with caring for two infants under the age of one. Alexis is seven months old, and Samuel is a solid ten months, so sleep seems to be a rare commodity in the Rubin household. Since I’m often gone several nights a week during the Perfect Weight America Tour, the brunt of the child-caring duties are falling squarely on Nicki’s shoulders since it’s up to her to get up and care for those kids.

They say that childhood obesity in the U.S. has hit a plateau.
Jordan Rubin's PWA Blog By Jordan Rubin on 6/24/2008 7:39 AM
Wednesday, May 28: Did you see the news story today about how the Centers for Disease Control says that the rise in childhood obesity in the last three decades has “leveled off”? To me, that’s like standing in ankle-deep floodwaters and saying it’s quit raining so hard. The fact of the matter is that obesity among children—and adults—has been one of the biggest public health issues in the last five or ten years, both here and around the world.

The weeks are racing by as we blitz the state of Florida with the Perfect Weight America message.

Monday, May 26: For nearly five months, I’ve been out on the road every week with the Perfect Weight America Tour. If you think about it, a lot has happened since I started the tour in San Diego on January 1, most notably with the gas prices. Back in December 2007, national retail fuel prices were $3.06 a gallon. Now we’re well north of four bucks a gallon—and diesel fuel has punched through the $5 a gallon ceiling! With the cost of gas soaring through the roof, have I noticed less people coming to my health seminars?

How are you at reading nutrition labels?
Jordan Rubin's PWA Blog By Jordan Rubin on 6/16/2008 8:20 AM
Friday, May 23: The Perfect Weight America Tour stuck close to home this week, which gives me a little time to talk about the importance of reading nutritional labels. First, let me catch you up on what I’ve been doing. We were in Tampa on Tuesday—that has a nice ring to it—where I did a book signing at the local Nutrition S’Mart. Afterward, I invited the hard-working staff out to dinner at Macaroni Grill, where we talked shop. On Wednesday, I did a seminar at Ada’s Natural Foods, and yesterday, Thursday, I was at Nature’s Garden Organic Café and Market in Ft. Myers. I arrived at my home in Palm Beach Gardens late last night, and tonight I’m doing a book signing at the Whole Foods in Boca Rotan, which is around a half-hour south on Interstate 95.

Yesterday, I talked about how seed sales are up and people are planting more backyard gardens . . . either to save money, eat organically, or do both.

Wednesday, May 21: Well, I haven’t torn up my backyard to plant a garden, but I am growing my own cucumbers as well as four varieties of lettuce in a pair of hydroponic towers situated in my backyard patio.

I’m not too sure that a new weight-loss drink that traps gases in foods would be your “perfect meal.”

Wednesday, May 14: Did you see the news today that the makers of Slim-Fast have developed a new weight-loss drink that traps gases in foods to make people feel fuller? Unilever, the company that sells $400 million worth of Slim-Fast each year, presented their findings at the 2008 European Congress on Obesity in Geneva, Switzerland.

What a difference a year makes in our Mother’s Day.
Jordan Rubin's PWA Blog By Jordan Rubin on 6/9/2008 10:22 AM
Monday, May 12: Nicki and I celebrated quite a Mother’s Day yesterday, and what made it more remarkable was thinking about how much things have changed in only one year. Just 12 months ago, we were the parents of one child, Joshua, who was about to turn three years old. Then, through a set of miraculous circumstances, Nicki and I adopted two children, and now we have our hands full with three children three years of age and under. Read my blog from Tuesday, February 26 to get all the details.
