My Mom did this with me and my sisters when I was a kid - GROW AN AVACADO TREE INDOORS!

Here's how:

Avocado seed, sharp nail, 3 toothpicks, tumbler/glass

Pierce the avocado seed with the nail to make three holes evenly spaced around the middle of the seed.

  1. Insert a toothpick in each hole.
  2. Fill the tumbler with water and balance the avocado seed on the top, making sure the bottom of the seed is in the water.
  3. Place on a window ledge.
  4. Soon it will begin to produce a root and a shoot.
  5. As soon as the shoot has a few leaves, snip off the top ones to encourage the plant to branch out.
  6. Pot the little tree when the roots are thick. If you live in a warm climate, you can plant the tree outside.
  7. Remember to keep it watered.

Avocado Trees are evergreens!  They can get pretty big - somewhere around 25 feet or more.

Just thought it'd be fun to share, it's a good idea, and I think I'll start this with my daughter this weekend.

Marvelissa, I do not have any children, but still love planting "grocery store" seeds in my house. I have always tried to get an avocado seed to grow with no success until recently. One evening I just pushed the pits from a bowl of gaucomole into the dirt with some potted house plants. A few weeks ago shoots started popping up. I now have six little avocado trees! I'm so excited. I didn't know they were evergreen or they got to 25 feet tall. That will be a challenge as I have to keep them inside. I think the winters in Kansas would kill them outside. Have any of your trees ever bore fruit? I'm wondering if there needs to be more than one in order to produce fruit.

Do they need a warm climate all year round? I live in Ohio and we get snow in the winter.
