I thought tea would be a healthy substitute and i know the PWA book recommends oolong and green tea but I have grown skeptical due to this recent experience i had with tea:

I saw a box of lipton tea in the grocery aisle and thought I'd really like to learn to make tea. So I purchase the tea, go home and follow the instructions on the back. I use raw cane sugar to sweeten it and pour it over some ice and successfully make some yummy iced tea.  I was so proud of myslef and thought it tasted so darn good that I indulged about six full glasses by myself.  About two hours later I went to bed and realized I wasn't falling asleep as easily as I usually do. Then, very suddenly I began to have A lot of thoughts. This progresses very quickly and I'm soon faced with racing thoughts   I burried my head under my pillow cuz I serioulsly believed in my mind that the world was coming to an end. I thought about calling a friend for help, but I couldn't focus enough to scroll through the contacts in my phone. I guess I eventually fell asleep, however when I awoke I felt very worn out
  That's when  it dawned on me that tea has CAFFEINE in it.  I never drink caffeine..and I had like, five or six glasses of tea that night.

A few days later I went to a friend's house and she offered me a glass of red diamond tea. It was all she had to drink and I was very parched and  I figured one glass wouldn't hurt(especially with ice, so it was more like half a glass)--but very soon my brain and mind started to race AGAIN. Not near as bad as before.. but enough to bother me. 

Why does this happen? Isn't the caffeine in tea sposed to be like, a natural thing???  Is cafeeine a drug or something?? Has anyone else had this reaction??? I can drink pop(though i usually never drink it) and the caffeine in pop does NOT have the same effect at ALL!!!  Pop just makes it take longer for me to fall asleep at night with it  in my system. Can anyone explain this???  I hated my experience with tea and when I see the box of tea in the cupboard I nearly get scared cuz it reminds me of what happened. I really hope someone can help me.

Lipton tea is a black tea that does have caffeine in it, although generally not as much as coffee. But it really depends on how long you steep the tea as to how much strength, i.e. caffeine you will end up with. I personally drink a lot of Lipton tea and don't have a problem, but I stop drinking it & anything with caffeine by 1pm or so to avoid sleep problems. I've heard that if you steep the caffeinated tea bag in hot water for about 5 seconds, then remove it & place in a different cup of hot water, you will have removed the caffeine completely; I have no idea if that's true. There are many herbal teas available that are completely caffeine free, but I believe Oolong & green tea also have caffeine. If you are not a caffeine user regularly, that probably explains your strange reactions; I'm sure it was just the buzz! I'd suggest you stay away from all caffeine products if your reaction was this severe.

Wow Summer, that is a severe reaction to caffeine like I have never seen. I have never had one quite that bad, but I stay away from caffeine after about 4 pm like Tess says. I go to bed very late at night, so I can wait until later if I am drinking caffeine. I have been avoiding it all together lately because my BP was up. Most of the time I make decaf tea or some of the great herbal teas that are available. I too, would suggest you avoid caffeine products completely so you can rest and not have the reaction. I really appreciate the both of you taking time out to read my long post. I will take your advice and steer clear of caffeine in the future. I also wanted to tell you that i googled my strange reaction and got this:

Yes, You Can Be Allergic To caffeine.

Some people have asked if people can be allergic to caffeine. I’m no doctor, but yes. Yes, you can be allergic to caffeine. And it’s not something a lot of doctors have known to look for. The effects of caffeine allergy look like some more severe mental disorders.

When you’re suffering from an allergic reaction to caffeine, one or more of the following things can happen: “loss of focus, intellectual deterioration, delusions, loss of judgement, and other symptoms of poisoning.” Because many people don’t properly recognize the caffeine allergy, they continue to ingest it (and why wouldn’t they?), and that can damage the brain and make things worse.

With symptoms like loss of focus and delusions and symptoms of poisoning, it’s no wonder the reaction often goes improperly diagnosed. What is diagnosed? “ADHD, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, OCD, TMJD, PMS, and other conditions.”

If your doctor diagnoses you with any of the above, and you ingest a lot of caffeine, make sure he rules that out as a cause before putting you on a lot of drugs.

So I'm thinking I'm either allergic or had poisoning from all those glasses of tea i consumed that night....

Wow Summer that is really something! I am going to share that with some people I know here, who have been diagnosed with some of those problems. That is just amazing to think that it could all be from caffeine. I hope you are finding something else to drink instead..... Thanks for sharing that info!

I only drink "herbal" teas because caffeine makes me anxious. You can find lots of great organic herbal teas and can drink them hot or iced. And we shouldn't be using any sugar at all (except honey or stevia). I wouldn't use any cane sugar even if organic.

I love herbal tea too Roberta, I make up my own from my organic herb beds.........You are right though, there are tons of great herbal caffeine free teas to get at the store that make great iced tea in the summer. Keep using that honey and stevia too, that is the best way to go. I like local honey in my tea myself. Welcome and I wish you lots of luck!

I love TEA !!! My fav is blueberry , it is high in antioxidants. I drink a ton of different herb teas. I usually drink camomile at night , the warm tea calms & relaxes me. I also like DECAF Green Mint. I also have a major problem with caffeine.
When I was young we drank sweet tea every day all day , I am from the south and that is what southerners drink. My Mom figured out the tea was depressing her and making me hiper. She did not notice problems with the rest of the family. She switched us all to WATER. (It took many years but we discovered my Mom was a true Hyper Active person , caffeine depresses the ADD or ADHD.)
Many years later I take what I learned from my Mom and applied it to my kids. My kids are water drinkers , with herb teas or lemon water. My oldest demands water over all drinks.
When we have a bunch of kids over I usually make a "zinger" tea and sweeten with stevia. They all love it , funny they do not every ask if I am trying to feed them something that might be good for them or be high in antioxidants.
