I am a newbie (actually starting after Christmas) and I am concerned about starting and then failing.....again. It has happened numerous times before which I bet is very familiar with a lot of people.

I am a mom to 5 children all under the age of 12 and homeschooling. Unfortunately, my family is in the habit of eating poorly do to my poor choices and not having the time to spend in the kitchen prepairing meals. And I am not quite sure how to feed a family of 7 in this way w/o going bankrupt!

My main weakness is sugar. I use it to 'comfort' me during times of stress. Because of years of doing this, I have become insulin resistant (pre-diabetic). Should I be following Jordan's little book The Rx's Physician's for Diabetics or this program?

My health has deteriorated (thyroid issues, chronic fatique, aches and pains) because I have focused on everyone else instead of me. But, the reality is, if I don't start focusing on my own health, I won't be around for them which is disheartning. Unfortunately, this alone, has not been enough of a motivation to stay on tract. I guess it's just a downward spiral - one that can be broke - with the Lord's help and support such as this website.

Thanks for listening - any suggestions would be welcomed.

Hi, Mommy25! Welcome! I definitely understand the fear of starting and then failing. It can become a viscious cycle. But fortunately it is also a cycle that can be broken!

I have 4 children and also homeschool, though I am not homeschooling this year. We are missionaries and are back in the States for about 8 months so my children are attending a school here while we're in the States, but I really miss homeschooling. As a mom, it's so easy, like you said to focus on everyone else and "let yourself go". I too started having some serious health problems until I finally decided to do something about it. It was not too long after that, that a friend gave me one of Jordan Rubin's books and since that time my health (and my weight) has improved tremendously! You asked if you should follow Jordan's book The GPRX for Diabetics or this one. Compare the two and you will probably find the diet aspect is probably pretty similar. I have done the GPRX diet before and they are a lot alike. Coming up with a plan and then finding someone to hold you accountable is the first big step to making a lifestyle change. Jordan's books give a great plan, and this site is a great place to find someone to hold you accountable. You can email me at coachsueann@yahoo.com if you want to become diet buddies or just have someone to vent to if you need.

You mentioned the lack of time in the kitchen. Have you tried getting your children involved? Homeschooling can provide so many opportunities for teaching your children in different ways - like in the kitchen! I started making nutrition a part of our everyday curriculum. I taught them what I was learning and made lunch time more like a "health class". Just a thought. Also, it is difficult to feed a larger family following this plan. But you can make adjustments in the meal plans. We can't afford the extensive variety the meal plans give. When we are overseas, we REALLY have to adjust the meal plans but it is workable.

I hope that I can be of some help to you and also an encouragement.

Mommy 25 and Susan,

I also am a single, homeschooling mom of 4!  My children are all the healthy ones in life, and at this time in life can eat anything their heart/gut desires...They are kids, but someday it will catch up.

The kids have jumped on board as mom tries to get her health and life back.  We only eat raw fruits and veges and we do an Extreme soup that has onions, spinach, carrots, chicken, black beans and jalapeno's in it for at least one meal a day.  I dont think it is all that different from Jordan's chicken soup, and is economical.  The kids have noticed not so much weight loss, they don't need to lose weight, but a sensitivity to cereals, and sugared foods.  Easter will be very trying for them though.  They are going to visit family while I work, and it will be loaded with salty, sugary, and seafoods.  Very few if any raw veges and fruits...So, I will prepare a fruit and vege salad for them to bring with them, and make sure they eat before they leave, so they wont be as tempted to snack away.

I also have found that as we have begun to "portion size" our meals that it isn't as expensive.  We are into cutting costs everywhere, and have cut our electric usage, to help compensate where the budget may require more food expenses.  We do not eat out any more at all...Who wants to stuff themselves with fast food, and feel sick and starving in an hour anyway?   This is interesting for us because my 18 yr old works at Burger King, chucking, and she has to refuse their offers of drink breaks and buying a .48 cent meal to take home...

Mommy25 I know you can do this, for your health and the well-being of your children.  My dad had his first stroke in his 40s and in a few months I will be at the big 40!  Please for your health, and the happiness of your children, find a way to implement at least a few of the ideas.  I have about 100 lbs to lose, ouch....but I look at it as if I can just lose a pound a week in two years I will be at my goal, yet again.  The hard part is I don't look that overweight.  I carry it well, but I know, what I looked like 4 yrs ago, and maybe I will be a bit older, grayer, and hopefully healthier and wiser, but I know...at 2 lbs a month I can do it again.

Sincerely, Lynnmarie

Hi, Lynnmarie! Congrats on setting such a healthy example for your kids! So good to "meet" you! I look forward to hearing more about your PWA experience.

Feel free to come by our thread "need support and encouragement" here under the public pages and testimonials. Some of us are working together there to keep each other accountable and motivated.

Focus on what you are doing right and that will motivate you more than focusing on your shortcomings....at least that holds true for me. :)
