Hello, I'm new here as I begin on my journey towards losing weight and gaining my perfect weight. I begin the program in a week. Everything looks good and I'm positive that it is very beneficial, but what I'm concerned about is the affordability of following through with the program. I have the desire to eat healthier and become more active, yet the cost of the foods on the shopping list might not allow for me to buy everything that I need to prepare all the meals that have been planned for me. I'm only a working class, low-income citizen. ( Don't pity me.) What can I do?

I am in the same boat as far as income.  We have always ate healthier than some by picking the right kinds of food.  We may not always have organic or even natural but we have veggies and whole grain, no pre-cooked or packaged dinners.  We also don't always use a bunch of vitamins or supplements.  If the money is not there it just can't be done.

However, low income doesn't give anyone the excuse to eat frozen pizza, or frozen dinners no matter how healthy the dinners claim to be.  We spend less on ingredients (not necessarily organic) to build our own pizza from scratch (not from boxed pizza crust) than our friends do to buy frozen.

My mom used to buy Hamburger Helper on sell because she had even less money to work with.  My husband band the stuff from our household as soon as we married.  I quickly found that I could buy rice and veggies to make my own skillet concoctions a lot cheaper.  And once you get used to it it doesn't take that much more time.

If you can't afford some of the cuts of meat or variety of fish, substitute with a lower cost version that is allowed.  You don't have to follow the meal plans exactly, they are to give you ideas to work with.

Hi,

I am glad the question was asked. I am thankful for your response. I am pretty much in the same boat. My husband works but I am disabled and on SS Disability. That makes things tight. I do have to keep my supplements. An alternative/ medical doctor sent me in the right direction about 7 years ago. Before that I keep spiraling downhill. I've replaced most of my prescription meds with natural supplements and have been slowly progressing uphill. Since my disability is is from a birth deformity, I can not completely overcome it, but with God's help and guidience, I can be the best I can be with it. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me! I feel that this is the next step in my healing.

I try to buy local grown foods when possible but that can be expensive at times. We try to buy organic when we can, but the cost is so much more. We have a small yard so a big garden is out. My husband made flower beds around the house. Most of them are vegie beds. He also made me one small one in the back yard. This year we have planted peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, onions, cabbage, romaine lettuce, parsley, basil and oregano. I planted some old green bean seeds in front of the tomatoes, but I guess they are to old. I guess I am saying this because it is one way I save on the cost of food and I know that my vegies are natural.

I can't follow the menu either. My meals have to be very simple and I can't cook consistently. I so used it to get an idea on what I should be doing and follow as best I can.

Barbara and Christal, that is the best way to go. Do what you can where you can and don't overspend your budget. That will only make you stress out and set you up to fail. If you can grow your own that is awesome! If I was home more in the summer I would be too. I just try to get the freshest and healthy ingredients that I can afford. If you have to substitute something you can afford to do. Christal, I do the same thing you do for the skillet meals. If we make our own, we are avoiding tons of sodium and preservatives in the hamburger helper. Keep up the good work! Do the best that you can with what you have to work with.........I know that is what we do and we find that we get what we need. Best of Luck!

OMG - I wish I would have visited this board before I went thru my menu planning and printed up a FOUR PAGE SHOPPING LIST! I need a veggie & herb garden to shorten this list. Have the land, but no knowlegde, materials, etc., finances are limited and both hubby and I have had spinal injuries so physical work is limited - but not impossible. I don't mind repetitive meals during the day and while I wish I could get my husband on board, he's not. He has agreed to eat the dinners I make so I'm making choices I know that he would like to. On the nights he wants something different, he knows he has to let me know enough ahead so I can be prepared. Looks like I need to go back and redo my menu (hate that you get stuck on that page too and can't go back!). Any quick, easy and cost efficient ideas are greatly appreciated. I start on the 21st. Will be out-of-town from the 16-20 so I'm trying to plan ahead. THANK YOU!

I usually do organic yogurt and some kind of berry in it each day. One lg container is about 4 servings. They make it over in another town where I live and if I am in the area, I will go there and buy a bunch. Mom tells me it is less expensive than the market, but it is so far away I will only save money if I am in the area with the price of gas.LOL!! I usually alternate that with eggs as they are an inexpensive alternate. I watch for sales on the meats and put some ahead in the freezer. Last night I made a double batch of chili and I will either freeze it or serve it on Monday. I also get fish when it is on sale too. One thing I learned from talking to the fish manager at the market, is that often it comes in already cryovac packed, and they defrost it and put it out for sale. Since I am buying an extra meals worth when I go, I ask them for all frozen fish from the walk-in. Fish does not "re-freeze" very well so it helps out to get it and keep it frozen until I use it. I also like fruit, so I buy whatever looks fresh and making up a big bowl of fruit salad and use it for a snack when it is snack time. I also make a lot of chicken soup (not the cleansing) because it makes a lot of meals for me. Tuna fish just went on sale again and it was huge, so I went and bought up a bunch. I actually try and save a couple bucks each week on the side for when a great sale goes on, so I have some funds to work with and it does not hurt our budget too much. I hope that gives you a little help! I am hoping your husband will get more on board as he sees your fantastic results. I am lucky that my husband is also meat type and he is supportive and willing to eat what I do. Best of luck to you!!!

I stockpile when things go on sale. Usually by the time I run out, the stores are having another sale. I try my very best to eat organic but sometimes it is very costly. I just do the best I can!

One of the best investments I made toward following the guidelines toward healthier living is an extra freezer!  I live in a farming community and when the local stands are up and running, I buy twice and much as I need and put it in the freezer.  I usually can't do enough to carry me all the way through the winter, but I find myself going for weeks without having to buy overpriced, out of season fruits and veggies from the local grocery store when I try to freeze during the summer.  This is also easy to do with canning applesauce, green beans and many other things.  The local vendors really are a lot cheaper and better tasting and we are having yummy sweet corn even now in January.  Plus, I can stock up on meats when they are on sale.
